Earthquake insurance in Kansas is available for an average of less than $7 a month.
“It’s cheap,” said Rex Buchanan, interim director of the Kansas Geological Survey. “It’s cheap for a reason.”
Buchanan said this past week the KGS was fielding questions about quake insurance after many Kansans felt tremors from a 5.6-magnitude earthquake last weekend that was centered in Sparks, Okla., about 44 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.
Buchanan said he wasn’t giving Kansans specific advice as to whether to buy quake coverage.
“It depends on what kind of person you are,’ he said. “If it makes you feel better, it’s your decision.”
Standard homeowner’s policies in Kansas don’t include earthquake coverage, though quake insurance is available for purchase by those willing to pay extra.
Tamara O’Connor, spokeswoman for State Farm Insurance, said northeast Kansas residents on average can probably get earthquake coverage for “less than $70 to $80 a year,” though the cost varies depending on factors that include the home’s age, structure type and value.
