Disabled man Christopher Hands is warning other people with disabilities after being targeted by an opportunist thief at a Christchurch shopping mall.
Mr Hands was backing out of a carpark marked for disabled people at Northlands Shopping Centre last week when a man ripped open the rear door and took off with a bag containing his credit cards and a cheque book.
He'd just had his laptop computer checked at Dick Smith's and noticed a young man talking to two women near the disabled car parking as he was putting his computer and bag into his car.
The 70-year-old, who uses two walking sticks, placed his computer on the floor of his car and covered it, but the thief still managed to grab his other bag.
``I got a bit of a shock when he ripped the door open. [I] put my foot down and nearly hit another car,'' he said.
``The guy took off in a red car that was parked in a disabled park just along from where I was. I tried to cut him off, but it was too late.''
