It’s an important step in the 21-year-old’s burgeoning career that started in motocross and blossomed, at the tender age of 14, into mini-bike road racing.The Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme’s (FIM) Superstock series is a feeder to the topflight World Superbike (WSBK) Championship (last year’s Superstock champion, Ayrton Badovini, is a front runner in WSBK, which ranks only below MotoGP as the pinnacle of motorcycle racing) and the two-race tryout a reward, thanks to BMW Canada’s motorrad division, for dominating — winning six out of its seven races — our own superbike championship in 2011.
Though he didn’t win the Portimao Supersport race (nor was he expected to as his equipment was out of date), McCormick succeeded in the first maxim of racing: If you don’t finish atop the box, then at least beat your teammate. Besting all three of Garnier Alpha’s three contracted riders, including Markus Reiterberger, who stands eighth in the championship, McCormick was consistently the team’s top rider, a not inconsequential feat since Alpha also runs BMW’s factory WSBK squad.
