HAPPY 100th CHEVROLET!
Next week, the automotive industry celebrates the 100th anniversary of General Motors’ leading car division.
Chevrolet Motor Co. was incorporated Nov. 3, 1911, and, for much of its history, the Chevy brand has claimed the honor of “USA-1” — the most popular model in the country.
Chevrolet has had a remarkable career — many successes, along with a few bumps, but is only one of hundreds of car companies to make it through 100 years.

When this columnist was with THE manufacturer, the name “FORD” was never used in sales meetings — the reference to Ford was, “Our nearest principal competitor.”
The brand was named after Louis Chevrolet, who had the company title of Consulting Engineer, and was not even an officer of the company. Louis preferred to test his racing machines on public streets, which local authorities, understandably, disliked. He beat legendary Barney Oldfield in at least three races.
