WILSON— Robert F. Burtwell thinks 11 must be his lucky number, and, as he turns 100 today on 11-11-11, who would argue?
This will be the second time he has seen 11-11-11, as he was born on Nov. 11, 1911 — eight years before the first Armistice Day was proclaimed.
“It’s easy to remember,” he said of his unusual birthday, as a quick grin lit his face during a recent walking tour of his Wilson farm.
Life’s been good to this spry native of St. Catharines, Ont., who held a variety of jobs over his lifetime and had his share of interesting experiences, which he can recall with striking clarity and in minute detail.
For example, while still a teen, he headed west to Calgary with the promise of a job.
“It was the Great Depression, and there were no jobs here,” he said, settling into a dining room chair in a tidy room filled with family photos dating back decades.
When his Chevy broke down en route to British Columbia, he hopped an open boxcar—along with many other down-on-their- luck men—and arrived in Calgary broke and abandoned by the friend who had led him there.

After moving to the US in 1952, he worked at Harrison Radiator and retired from Pfeiffer Foods in Wilson as a warehouse supervisor in 1974. But Burtwell didn't stop there. That's when his roadside vegetable stand went into full swing.
